Programme Notes
Gershwin wrote the overture for orchestra in July and August 1932, after a holiday in Havana. It was first called Rumba. The New York Philharmonic under Albert Coates gave the premiere at Lewisohn Stadium, New York, on 16 August 1932. The score asks for Cuban percussion (bongo, claves, gourd and maracas). Philip Sparke’s brass band arrangement is published by Studio Music.

Notes
- Instrumentation. Left empty. The sample showed the standard template, not checked against the score; no source for this arrangement's scoring was found, and the spec says the section stays empty when no source lists the parts.
- Whose grade? The grade comes from the arranger's own site, not the publisher's (Studio Music). Studio Music's product page returned HTTP 503 all session, so its own grade, price and duration couldn't be checked.
- Grade (rechecked 2026-11-08). Studio Music's product page (M-050-08313-9) loaded on a second pass and shows no difficulty letter or grade, so the arranger's Grade 5 stays as the only grade.
- Cost. Not filled. Stretta (Denmark) lists €105.60, and a search snippet attributed £64.95 to Just Music, but that page didn't load. No GBP price from a page read.
- Cost (filled 2026-11-08). £64.95 for the brass band set, from the publisher's own product page (Studio Music, M-050-08313-9). The page sells one item, "CUBAN OVERTURE (Brass Band)", and does not say whether it is score and parts; it is entered as score and parts because no separate score-only listing was found. No score-only price.
- Duration conflict. The publisher's page (Studio Music) gives "Duration 10:19", used here under the publisher-first rule. The arranger's site gives "10 Mins" and Stretta 10 minutes. 10:19 is also the track time of the Foden's recording on the publisher's CD, so the publisher's figure may be taken from the recording.
- Catalogue number. The publisher's page prints the part number M-050-08313-9 (the ISMN without the 979 prefix), used here. The arranger's site links to the same product as M050083139A.
- Other arrangement. Studio Music also sells a different brass band arrangement, by Phillip Littlemore (Timbercroft Publishing, TPBB-004, 6:20). It is not this work.
- Year. 2010 for the arrangement comes from Brass Band Results' year field. A search snippet suggested Just Music lists "published 2011" (unverified).
- Premiere. The orchestral premiere (New York Philharmonic under Albert Coates, Lewisohn Stadium, New York, 16 August 1932) is in the programme notes. No premiere of the brass band arrangement was found, so the Premiere line is empty.
- Media. World of Brass gives catalogue number QPRL232D but no label name or release year. The publisher's page names the CD as "Polyphonic QPRL232D Sea Pictures", so the label is Polyphonic; the release year is still not stated.
- Composer's works. Gershwin wrote nothing for brass band, so the useful list here is the arranger's.
- Footer year. Shown as 1932 (composition), which hides the arrangement year.
